What is a conflict of interest?
A conflict of interest is a situation where a person exercising a public function or decision-making power faces a conflict between their public (official) interest a private interestswhich may affect or at least raise doubts about the impartiality of its actions.
This is not just a real abuse of power, but also risk or appearancethat personal, property, business or family ties can influence decision-making. The legal regulation of conflict of interest aims to protect public trust in the exercise of power, ensure transparency and prevent public office from being used for personal gain. Conflict of interest must be addressed ideally before the public office is held, i.e. preventively. The emphasis is on timely notification, restrictions on certain activities and the separation of private interests from the performance of public office.
