In its recent ruling, the High Court in Prague allowed the operation of a security system at an international airport in the Czech Republic that enables real-time facial detection and remote biometric identification of people using AI.

The court justified its decision the existence of a legitimate and particularly pressing public interest to strengthen security in the international airport environment, in particular through early identification of high-risk individuals, targeted threat detection and adequate technical and organizational system security. Of course, this identification has its rules and limitations.

The permit for biometric identification of persons using AI was issued in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024, which sets out rules for the use of artificial intelligence. The permit is time-limited., while its validity period is not publicly available for security reasons.
